SOMA Based on Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, SOMA is a brand new performance piece combining the street and tap dancers of Blaze with FireBox' contemporary dancers. SOMA is the drug used to control the nation's workforce and it's controllers. It is a prescribed release from reality with no side effects and an instant antedote. FireBox will be performing SOMA at the Theatre Royal's Go Dance 10 on Thursday 28th January. Tickets £10 from 0844 871 7647 or online.
Silver FireBox are ready to hit the studio again and get working on some new material for the winter performance. The performance is booked for Saturday 28th November at Gilmorehill G12 and, as yet, we have nothing more than the ideas in my notebook to show you... better get cracking.
White Noise As the screen flickers you are sure you saw something, maybe it's nothing, no wait, there it is again. You can't quite make it out but you're sure you can see something, someone moving in the white noise. Keep looking, it's getting clearer...
As the sparks fly upwards... As the sparks fly upwards... is our latest piece and, if I do say so myself, the most interesting, most engaging and most thought-provoking if only for the 'how the hell did she do that?' factor. Lights are attached to dancers' bodies which are then tracked in the space by a camera and used as triggers by Isadora, an interactive software, for specific pre-recorded film clips. The movement is the same for the live and filmed dancers but the order is completely different. Sometimes in unison, sometimes in canon, sometimes completely out of sync. Initial feedback includes comparisons to photographic dark rooms watching images develop, appraisals of the dynamic, fluid movement and claims of 'this is the future of screendance'. The piece was initially shown as part of my degree show for my MSc Screendance in September 08 and is now forming part of Underneath the Arches at The Arches on 17th January. itch The latest film in FireBox's rep was devised and created with students from The Space, Dundee. The film was re-shot in April and is currently being edited.
LOOP LOOP is the result of a week long Dance House Creative Lab where Susan Elena was working with Joan Marshall on incorporating the movements of Bodyslam into FireBox's movement style. LOOP also features a live video feed giving the audience a unique 'all angles' view of the piece. LOOP will be developed into a full length piece as part of Susan Elena's MSc Screendance. The work will be developed at The Arches, Glasgow and will involve a range of filming and screening techniques.
